Hearty Dal

This Dal recipe has been my comfort food forever, and my favorite meatless dish growing up.  It is like a warm hug in a bowl.

I loved it meatless, but if you prefer to add meat, that works too!

__________

Serves 4 when accompanied with a salad and Basmati Rice

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Dal (or a lentil mix of your choice)
  • Pinch baking soda (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons Dal Mix
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or butter
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 3 cups water

Kitchen Equipment:

  • Emersion blender (optional)

Method:

  • Rinse lentil mix until water runs clear and soak for at least 1 hour
  • You can add a pinch of baking soda to the mix if you like – just rinse well before adding to pot when cooking
  • In a pot on medium heat, add 1 tablespoon ghee or butter
  • In small bowl, add Dal Mix and 2 tablespoons of water and stir until it forms a paste
  • Add paste carefully to pot and stir until fragrant (less than a minute)
  • Add tomato paste and stir for another minute
  • Add drained lentils and mix well
  • Add water and cook on medium high heat until water begins to boil
  • Stir and turn heat to simmer and cover pot for 30 minutes
  • Check to make sure that all lentils are soft.  If not, cover and keep checking every five minutes until lentils are soft
  • Optional – Can use emersion blender to carefully make a smooth curry
  • Transfer to bowl and serve with naan and Basmati Rice
